Along with the people in the world of music we lost, I’m paying tribute to folks from other walks of life that we said goodbye to last year. Today we break the baseball streak (to wild cheers
) and turn to one of the best actors of her generation.
Diane Keaton
I’d call her one of the best actors of her generation if the only movies she’d ever made were The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. Of course, that’s not all she ever did. I’m not a fan of Woody Allen’s stuff, so I’ve never seen her Oscar-winning performance in Annie Hall. I have read, though, that people consider it one of the greatest performances to ever win an Academy Award.
I have seen other things that show her brilliance. I love The Godfather, and I simply cannot imagine ANYONE else playing Kay Corleone. It would be a completely different movie without her. (Yeah, the fact that she was dating Al Pacino, who played Michael, didn’t hurt, but still…) She was the lead in the based-on-a-true-story film Looking For Mr. Goodbar (an interesting fact about that film said that she couldn’t do nude scenes without Bach music playing).
The clip below is her, Bette Midler, and Goldie Hawn obviously having the time of their lives in The First Wives Club. Under normal circumstances people might criticize the obvious lip-synching, but this isn’t ordinary, it’s a celebration.
And Diane Keaton wasn’t an ordinary actor.

It’s getting bad when people between my age and my brother’s age are dying.

I had just watched The First Wive's Club a few weeks before she passed. What a lady! I so respect those humans who trudge out into the world on their own and make a place for themselves. Especially women. She is quite a human. I am always so thankful for technology when one of the greats pass away. It gives us the opportunity to continue to see and enjoy them.

It’s hard to find someone Al Pacino didn’t date.
She was a wonderful performer.

Fun fact: the last PG-rated film to win Best Picture was Driving Miss Daisy.

According to her IMDB list, she was in an episode of Night Gallery, which was more “paranormal” than “sci-fi.”

I think everyone associates her with the Godfather movies, and Looking For Mr. Goodbar--I know I do. She did a few movies that were not as popular but that I enjoyed--The Other Sister, Amelia Erhart, I couldn't watch Annie Hall, either, no doubt for the same reasons you didn't want to watch it.

This was long before the allegations against Woody…I’ve just never found him remotely funny.

Yes, I agree. He isn't funny. But I do think he is...well, strange.
