Quick question that needs answering

I’m not a fan of rap, mostly because I can’t understand the lyrics. Perhaps I am going deaf. But my question is, why, pray tell, do all rappers I happen to see grab their crotch? I hope that word is allowed on myLot. Personally, I find it disgusting and embarrassing. Bad Bunny did it, too and on his halftime Super Bowl performance. Ugh! Do you know the answer?

I think it all started with Michael Jackson, and we know what a perv he was, genius but perv.

I never understood why they do, but I also find this disgusting. I think for them is a sort of symbol of masculinity. Ridiculous!

I don't listen to music let alone whatever rap is... I read online that one rapper, Jay-Z, said they do it as an unconscious gesture when they feel vulnerable and exposed onstage. They could just wear steel underwear if that was their problem and it would make them stop doing that. It's embarrassing to me when I see it.

@DianneN You're very welcome. And I totally agree. They could just record their "music" and sell the CDs if they're scared to be on stage. (You won't find me on stage doing anything. I'm shy and hate people staring at me.)

Oh thank you! I was hoping for a male point of view. I so agree with you. I never saw Tony Bennet ever feel the need to do that, for example. If those morons feel vulnerable and exposed (lol) on stage, they have no business being up there in my opinion.

@DaddyEvil Exactly! Are you really shy? I never had that impression of you. I am the opposite. Probably because I taught school and college and modeled when I was younger, taller, and thinner

Not a fan of rap either and I couldn't identify one of his songs if I tried. I don't know why some people do it but hey Madonna does too so it isn't limited to just men. I think it is distasteful.

The only time I saw Madonna do anything was at my granddaughter’s and her adopted daughter’s ice skating event. All Madonna do was make an entrance with her “people”. Never liked her. Btw, I never even heard of Bad Bunny or saw him until the Super Bowl hype.

@DianneN I didn't either but I liked the show. Didn't understand a word of it but I've always enjoyed hearing latin music when I've been in Mexico.

I don't think that is just a rap thing. Guys have been doing it since the 1990s. I remember the boys bands doing it. It doesnt effet me, so It doesn't bother me.

@thislittlepennyearns You’re right. It’s not the same. I grew up with two brothers and have two sons, male cousins and also have a lot of male friends, mostly from sports and the husbands of my friends, but they never did anything like that in front of me. There are lots of singing groups that also don’t. I’d smack my husband silly if he did that

@DianneN I guess that's where the age difference is. Some things that bug the older generation just don't bug mine. Because its been forced upon us on tv for our whole lives. I didn't watch the halftime show.

I also cannot stand to see this kind of action. I asked Hank my PC, and this is the answer I got This action serves as a bold, attention-grabbing move that can energize the crowd and enhance stage presence. It is a way to assert confidence and swagger, which are key elements in hip-hop culture

Wow! Well let’s start doing that ourselves! It certainly doesn’t energize me, because I don’t consider myself a pervert - just a prude. If those singers need to enhance stage presence and confidence, they shouldn’t be on stage. Thank you!

My first thought was Michael Jackson. I have no idea why they do this and the need. Michael Jackson claims its the music that drove him. Kind of sublimely over the tone of the music. I don't like rap either. It's vulgar.

I always assumed it was "part of the show" and what was expected of them. I do not know anyone who does that in real life, except young kids who do not know better. I do not watch rappers, etc.

I have no answer for that question. I do remember when one of my younger kids told me to listen to a rap song. In the song it sad Go ahead and kill a neighbor. Go ahead and kill a cop. I thought that type of rap song was in bad taste.
