Need More Protein

I went to the doctor about 35 minutes away this morning, for a test, and it turns out he doesn’t want it done anymore. This was the one that was closed Friday when I went. Oh, well. It is a gorgeous day outside, albeit it a little chilly. I know Sadie really enjoyed her walk, and I enjoyed another day of feeling good. I put in a grocery order to be delivered later this afternoon. The primary care doctor told me last week I need more protein in my diet so I’m hoping I did that with my grocery order. What have you been up to today? Do you get enough protein?

I'm always trying to add more protein to my diet. I add cottage cheese to my scrambled eggs and homemade bagels. I eat Greek yogurt regularly for breakfast.

Greek yogurt is what I normally have for breakfast. Darn, I should have added eggs to my order. Maybe I still can…

Well, the yoga and shopping, and of course online stuff. These days they seem to recommend protein for everybody. I am sure I could eat more protein.

She thinks that’s why my weight loss has stalled. And, I think she’s right.

@snowy22315 I did. I’m trying for 32 more. Got to get the rest of that steroid weight off. My doctor thinks it’s a good idea too.

Protein is even in broccoli. Nutritional yeast is easy to add to most anything.

@sallypup Yes, that is a good one. The other night I had couscous and lentils. What a combination!

@AmbiePam There are good soups that are easy to make. Lentils come to mind.

That would be frustrating! Hopefully you can get some more protein. That is not always easy.

Do I get enough protein--it depends on who you ask. I pretty well hit what my primary says is good for me. 90 grams daily. The clinical trial guy says I should do 150 grams daily. If you buy flavored Greek yogurt you are missing a good opportunity. It only has about 7 gr. protein per serving. Unflavored Greek yogurt can have close to 17 gr. per serving. Then you add your own fruit and no starches to thicken it or sugar to sweeten it. Something I saw on the internet last night indicated that for women the 90 is optimum.

Thank you for that information! I had been buying the yogurt drinks with 20g of protein. But I’m sure that has added sugar.

Any normal balanced diet should provide plenty of protein, but eggs and pulses are good sources and cheap too.

@AmbiePam Dark meat chicken, and turkey provide good quality protein to supplement the beef.

I think I need more protein too. So far, l get it from meat, fish, soyabean nuggets and pulses. Perhaps I should add eggs to my regular meals. I was avoiding eggs for fear of gaining cholesterol.

Oh, yes, eggs would be a good idea, and now they aren’t considered a source of bad cholesterol.

Sometimes it's just hard to add protein, I totally get it. I have been trying harder as well. Lentils and beans do help. Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, cottage cheese, greek yogurt etc. there are ways to get there without meat if we have to do it that way. It just takes a bit of planning. I am sorry you made that trip for nothing. I know how that can be, it's very frustrating.

I definitely get a lot of Greek Yogurt in my diet. And I do like Brussel sprouts. I never have been able to get over cottage cheese though.

@AmbiePam I love cottage cheese, but not the ''large curd'' versions. Ugh, for some reason I think it's gross. But I do like the small curd.

I would look online to find foods that have high protein & write them down or paste them on a online note pad & hit save in the file tab up top, that's the best way to save stuff you want to remember.

I can’t tolerate the taste of those. I’ve tried. Right now I at least found a yogurt drink with 20g of protein. But it’s fantastic you can. You’re probably one of the few who have all that worked out.

@AmbiePam I'm older than you and I know how much my body needs protein to continue to function and be mobile. Carbs and sugar were my best friends from childhood until my 40's and they didn't do me any favors. I feel "lighter" and "stronger" when I eat a lot of protein.

Well, for me I have to lessen my protein intake. Maybe I've taken more protein. There are traces of protein found in my urine as found in my recent lab tests.

I usually do because I have chicken for at least one meal every day…unless I get turkey instead like I did yesterday. (I’m not passing smoked turkey up for anything!)

I've been trying to add more protein to my diet too. It's really hard some days and since I don't like eggs I have to rely on other things. I have noticed that many items now have added protein (like cereal, pasta, and of course the old "go to" protein bars) I guess every little bit helps. Hope you can find easy ways to increase your protein.
