Are You Still Working? Retired?

I'm interested in knowing who is still working and who has retired or maybe you never worked. If you're still working, in what field are you working? What has been your career path? If you retired, when did you retire? Was it a normal retirement or a disability retirement?
I retired in 2010 on disability at the age of 62. At the time I was working as an Accounting Office Manager. I had been with the company for 15 years and had planned on retiring from that company; however, they filed for bankruptcy so they could be bought out by another company. I looked for another job for a while; but then because of my physical limitations I decided to file for disability and was approved the first time through.
I have worked in advertising, customer service, finance, management; and I even had my own temporary placement service for 7 years.
What about you?

I haven’t worked in a very long time and that was a big mistake on my part.

@porwest Sadly no backup plan. I definitely don’t have much credits in social security.

I would still be working in the schools if I had not had to quit to take care of Bob. My main jobs have always been care taking or education, or a combination of them both. I have done some office work and retail, but mainly care taking.

@LindaOHio They want to increase the age to 70, as the average lifespan has increased.

@LadyDuck They're going to ruin retirement for a lot of people that way.

That’s impressive, Linda. You know I worked from 16 to 25, and then had to go on disability.
My dad is retiring at the end of the year, when he’ll be 72. Even after that, he still plans to get a part time job. My stepmom took an early retirement at age 61 due to her marrying my dad. She lived an hour and a half away from my dad, and she couldn’t see making the drive for a long period of time. She worked in the front office of the hospital in her town for decades.

@LindaOHio honestly, I don't see myself retiring with all the expenses and how the world economy is turning out. If generational wealth ever lands in my lap, then I might reconsider.

@FourWalls Hubby had asthma. Maybe it's one of the reasons he got his disability, along with having bypass surgery, etc.

I am retired but my job never retires unless I get too infirmed. I have been a caregiver for humans and a Veterinary go for- cleaning kennels, holding cats and dogs, washing cats and dogs- whatever the Vet needed I was there. I also have done a little paid writing work for a small newspaper.

I've done a lot of writing too. Not so much lately. The vet job would have been fun I think.

I originally worked in science and medical research, then I've had 15 years as an editor of scientific papers. Now I'm looking for something new - work has dramatically fallen away in the last year or so and I blame AI because its ability to translate and re-write even very technical work has advanced massively.
Apart from those 'proper jobs' I did the usual stints during school and university as a waitress, delivering news-sheets, and doing all sorts of odd jobs for an older couple I refer to as 'my mad old friends'. And I've been a volunteer motorcycle instructor, SCUBA diving instructor and volunteer at theatre and music events. Now I'm doing more paid events work and looking for something new. Thinking of re-training as a driving instructor or a plumber or maybe a gardener

@LindaOHio Thanks. Yes I've been lucky that I've had work I enjoyed. But now I need to find something new. Who wants to employ an old woman??

@Fleura You're welcome.
That's what stressed me out when the company went bankrupt. I was 62. Who wants to hire a 62 year old? Fortunately my disability was approved and I retired.

That is a lot of work over the years! I had a job in a hospital kitchen for a couple years while I was going to college. I probably should be working, but I couldn't work a regular job with my anxiety, and now my back and leg pain. I couldn't stand around 8 hours a day.

@LindaOHio I was told diabetes doesn't count. I have no proof of my anxiety, and not sure that even counts. Also my pain, they'd probably say go fix it and then get a job lol.

I'm retired and collected early social security. I had planned on working many more years but I was working for Ford at the time and they went through a period where they closed numerous dealerships. I loved my job (worked in the accounting department) . Tried working for another dealership (not Ford) but the management was horrible. So, I decided to retire early, sold my house and moved to PA to be closer to my kids and grandkids. No regrets

I'm a hybrid. I retired six years ago at age 50 from my 33 year long career in municipal government (20 years at the job I retired from). I had made it my lifelong goal to retire by age 50 so I could enjoy all of the second half of my life. But, I am still working, mostly because most of my money is tied up in retirement accounts that I can't start collecting from until either 62, 65, or 67. So I needed something to hold me over until then. So, I'm working at a job I love, working hours I choose, and still getting to do all the fun things I want to do in life. Not to mention it's allowed me to focus more time and energy on my paintball career.

Interesting that you taught piano. I taught myself how to read music and play basic notes; but I wasn't very good at anything more than that.
