Dealing with flatpacks

MyLotter, Marie Coyle, wrote about assembling flatpack products and how difficult it is for some people. I was reminded of the time my siblings and I purchased an outdoor setting for my parents 60th wedding anniversary. The four chairs and table came in flatpacks. We started on a chair and had a great deal of trouble assembling it. In the end we put it aside and started on another which went together very easily, as did the next two. Eventually we worked out that the first chair had two left arms instead of a left and a right. As it was the first one we started on, we thought we were at fault but it wasn’t us at all. The photo shows our bedroom wardrobes half-completed. They came as Ikea flatpacks.

I haven’t bought one in awhile, but the last one I got was put together by my sister. You can give her anything, and she’ll put it together. Her skills amaze me since I share none of the same ones.

I am sure there are things you are good at that are hard for her. Usually that’s how it works with siblings. I’ve got a good sibling joke for you, @AmbiePam. I learned to sew at a young age from one of my grandmothers. My sister tried sewing but she had no patience for it. I tried to help her, made her some items and some clothes for her Barbie doll. That gave her an idea—she cut out doll clothes patterns and glued them directly on the doll!!

I honestly think most people could put these together but they are scared to try it for fear they will mess it up. I would love a closet with more shelves and cubby spaces, but my closets are not very large.
