National Lighthouse Day is celebrated on August 7th to honor America’s maritime history and the federal preservation of lighthouses.
It marks the anniversary of the Lighthouse Act of 1789, signed by President George Washington, which placed navigational aids under federal control to secure safe shipping routes.
President Ronald Reagan designated the first official day on August 7, 1989, to mark the 200th anniversary of the Act.
Historical societies offer public tours, open towers, and educational programs to teach the public about maritime engineering.
The day recognizes the bravery of past lighthouse keepers who protected ships from treacherous coastlines.

I've never seen a lighthouse in real life. Only pictures of them.

@RebeccasFarm I think so, too. Maybe, if the procedure the neurologist wants to use on me works, I'll feel like traveling again.

I love lighthouses but haven't had much opportunity to see them in person. The only one I've actually seen is in Wildwood,New Jersey

Yes, I do. lighthouses have very special affinity to my heart and spirit, metaphorically. Peace, hope and Light amidst great storms, darkness, fears and pain.

I often visit the lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe ….thats the most famous one I know …. But I guess you know about that one.
