How do you get rid of RICE on your diet, fast?

Philippines

I've been doing a good amount of exercise for 2 months now. I've noticed some good changes on my body, but there are still some stubborn fats that seems to be so hard to lose. And, my husband told me to cut down, big time, on rice. Rice, is the staple food here in the Philippines, and I am a rice-eater. I'm not so fond of eating a meal with no rice, and I even stop eating when I've finished all the rice. I've tried replacing rice with oatmeal, but there are times when the viand doesn't go well with oatmeal, especially those that are not dry. Any advice?

I could never give up rice! I love it. But there are differing opinions about it being healthy or not, fattening or not. Here is a site that may help you decide for yourself: www.healthmeup.com/news-weight-loss/diet-basics-is-rice-fattening/6767 Good luck with your workouts!

Thanks for sharing the link. It indeed is very informative. I never really thought white rice also has its nutritional content. But, it shows there that brown rice is a better alternative. However, I believe this is also more expensive than white rice.

Over here we have a grocery store called Trader Joe's. They sell organic brown rice and it isn't very inexpensive. But it's frozen and you just put it in the microwave. I know that's cheating but I love it. It tastes very good and is all natural. What about Basmati rice? It comes in white and brown. I like that a lot too, but don't know about the carbs or if it's fattening or expensive. Glad you liked the the link. Thanks for commenting. Have a great day!

Why is it frozen?

There is someone for you as a company! Even here also rice is our main stuff to each and eat a lot too! Just like you, I also tried to reduce some extra fats and think all the day for it, but don't do exercise. I used to tell that 'tomorrow onwards I will start ...', and justs before finishing the words, my daugher will complete the sentence..., and will say that 'from the last 13 years I am hearing from your mouth'. ahahahah She always say this and my wife would repeat the samy by saing for the last 18 years..... But I really think of doing something to reduce the excess fat and now I feel much irritated with the extra obesity and feel hate on it.... I think after 3-4 months I will do something better (now it is confidential)

I have some plans in my mind that certain equipment which one of my friend now using is quite good for health fitness and he (all members of his family) and it is best for all. I am planning to get it and let my try. It seems little costlier so that I am waiting to get some 'extra' cash at hand and then I wll go for a try. As my friend is using it and I noticed he got much better changes in his body share and best fit and since then I am planning to get it. Hopefully after 2-3 months time I may go for it and the great advantage is that we can use it at any time convenient to us and everybody at home can make use of it plus it can be fold in a small shape and keep it anywhere at home while not in use.

What equipment is that? or, if you don't know what it's called, can you describe what it does.

I used to be like you, always promising myself that I'd start exercising or dieting tomorrow, but never got on it. Good thing I was able to start exercising again after 3 years. And, I hope to continue this for a long time and make it part of my lifestyle.

We are on the same boat sis. I want to lose my extra fats too. It is hard for me because my work is always in front of computer and I seldom walk. Anyway, just two days ago I decided to cut rice intake. Extra carbohydrates that are not use by our body is just converted to fats that is. I asked my husband if we can just have a no-rice dinner. During nights, our metabolism is slower and because after meal, I just sleep, the carbohydrates I had from rice will just be fats.

It's really good to have a partner or a buddy on our diet and slimming plans. And, also for people around us to be supportive, and not be dragging us back. My husband used to be very disciplined in his diet, when he was still slimming down from his old 200-pounder self. But, right now, he's getting a little linient and allows himself to be tempted with the wrong diet. And, I'm also affected because we share the same meals everyday. Unfortunately, I'm not as strong willed as he is, and I often get swayed to his cravings.

Wow, that's a lot of discipline and determination, there. I hope I can have a similar program for myself, that I can stick to 100%. Right now, I'm cutting down on my intake on sweets. And, I don't have much coffee and cola in my diet anymore, compared to before. I only get to drink starbucks coffee on sundays, as part of my date nights with the husband.

Try potatoes instead of an oatmeal. Or if you can't really cut down on rice, try getting a brown rice instead.

If I can only avoid rice..but no i can't esp. when the viand is irresistible. What I do is, I eat rice in the morning, little for lunch and little for dinner..I'm still observing the effects of Carbtrim (hehe).. Anyway there are other sources of carbs, that I'm careful too..

Yeah, because at that time, I was pregnant, and I can't just take anything. My husband is the one who's more health conscious. I don't think carbtrim is only for women. It's just that, women are stereotyped to be more conscious of their body and looks.

My husband tried carbtrim, but he said it doesn't taste good. Were you able to endure the taste?

I have the apple flavor, it tastes better when it's chilled. Just make sure you dissolve it well. It didn't occur to me that guys would try it..hmmmmm..thought it's just for girls? (hehe)..haven't seen a male in commercial eh.. Anyways, I feel light every time I drink it..I'm not sure if it's just my thinking or what.

It is hard especially we are primarily depended on it every meal we take. I started to to reduced my intake but admittedly I still eat some rice. I started it at work where I do not eat rice during lunch break anymore. I either eat meat or fish but no rice there. It helped me somehow reduce weight but since I still eat rice I think the result was not that significant.

Well starting with baby steps can be helpful. I am as well looking forward to elimintating them but I know it will take time since our body has been used to it and removing them can have bad effect in our metabolism. I think slowly telling our body that we will remove rice from our diet would help your body and mind cope better.
• Philippines
17 Aug 12
It really is difficult to even reduce the intake, how much more, to totally wipe it out our system. That;s why I was trying to find a good alternative instead.

You can cut it down slow if you happened to eat 2 cups of rice you can lessen it every day by 1 1/2 then 1 cup and so on. I also don't eat rice at night bread or soup is fine with me. Above all this is determination if you really want to succeed in having a sexy body.
• Philippines
16 Aug 12
I guess determination is what I lack, to be consistent with whatever program I want to do. Sometimes, when I get so hungry and have cravings for sweets and other fatty food, I would then give myself reasons why I shouldn't avoid those. I would think that I really don't need to get a sexy body, because my husband loves me just the way I am, or I don't really need to get slimmer fast, etc, etc...

it is hard actually but i was able to minimize rice and not totally remove it as it is essential too. I did minimize it my friend, before i could eat more than 3 cups of it lol now i am satisfied with one.

If I get satisfied with just one cup, I'd be very proud. Right now, it's erratic. I could manage to have just half a plate of rice for lunch, then for dinner, I'd have double the amount. I don't know if that even helps.

I have to tell you, I have been eating brown rice every day for weeks now and little else and I am LOSING weight. If you want to lose weight cut out meats and fats. It is even better to exercise regularly and drink lots of water. Don't forget to have a little fruit each day.

Water doesn't make you gain weight, but eating meat will. You can get protein from other sources such as beans, cheese, nuts, and soy. If you are worried about the water retention eat apples and celery. Both are natural diuretics.
• Philippines
27 Aug 12
I think I can start with cutting down on rice intake, and have alternatives, but I may need to maintain my intake of enough meat for protein. I've been feeling thirsty a lot nowadays, so I get to drink more water. However, I'm also concerned that it would lead to gaining more weight. I am currently on a low dose contraceptive pill which could cause weight gain due to water retention.

When you are in certain conditions where your body retains the liquid you take, you can gain weight. Just like most pregnant women, there is such condition called edema, and I've experienced it, too.

You can never replace rice, specially because it's our staple food. Just eat rice in small amount, maybe 1/2 cup of rice every meal will do. But again, you cannot get rid of it..we been eating it since our childhood which created a great impact in our lives.

Hmm.. i'm not really sure of it, but then again it all depends on the person. It's his/her willingness, but for me i suggest you just lessen it. :)
• Philippines

Oh well, even lessening it is already a challenge for me. I'll start with that.

But, there are other Filipinos who've managed to take away rice, completely. Or, at least minimize it to the highest level. I wonder how they do that.

I cut it out by using barley. It doesn't go with everything but it goes with a lot. Since it has more protein and fiber it helps with the dieting. That and I just cut the amount I take by half. Good luck!

It's a cereal grain, high in protein and fiber. How is it sold in the market? I mean, what are its by-product?

When I was pregnant with my second child, I had gestational diabetes. I didn't have to completely take rice out of my diet, but I did have to cut down on it A LOT. When the doctors told me this, I said are you crazy - I am Asian and I need my rice - ha ha!! Well, I was allowed to have 1/3 cooked rice per lunch or dinner - but that's it. Brown rice was preferable in this strict diet - but oh I love my white rice. Brown rice is more nutritious and sits in your stomach longer - it's better for you. My mom got this rice that is partially brown .. . I don't know the name of it or anything - but it was the best alternative I've ever had. If anything, you don't have to give up your rice completely . . . but do cut down on the amount. Do that for a while and see if it actually makes a difference. I know oatmeal wouldn't be satisfying for me in place of rice.

I know - 1/3 of a cup is NOTHING!! That's like 2 bites of rice, right?! Look into the mixed one (I wish I could tell you what brand it was - my mom buys only Japanese rice, that at least I know) . . . that might be a good compromise that even the kids might like!
• Philippines

1/3 of a cup? Oh my, a cup is even not enough to satisfy me for a meal. Brown rice, yeah, I've heard of that. They say its more expensive, though. And, that would mean, I have to cook my own rice every time, because the rest of the family would have to keep their white rice, especially the kids.

I heard the rice is not good thing for fat people and rice is increased the weight. But where the main food is rice then I think this thought is not suitable. Try to avoid rice for some days and check your weight.

Mix your rice with other foods (meats, potatoes, veggies, whatever) instead of having each type of food on separate plates. Not sure if it'll work, but maybe you'll be able to trick your brain into thinking the amount of rice is larger than it actually is.
• Philippines
20 Aug 12
That's what I normally do. I have a plate with rice and whatever viand I have for the meal. I don't have separate plates for each food type. I recently have this strategy of eating very little rice with more meat or veggie on each spoonful. I used to have a big chunk of rice on a spoon, which means I easily run out of rice and then I scoop for more from the serving platter. I hope it'll work.

It is definitely true that when you are trying to lose weight, it is important to get rid of a lot of carbohydrates in your diet and white rice is definitely one of those things that you should eliminate because it will turn into sugar in your body and doesn't add very much nutritional value. So, if you find that you are not able to enjoy a meal without having rice with your meal, I would suggest that you try eating brown rice instead as it is more healthy and will also fill you up faster than white rice.

That's definitely a good one to consider, but until now I haven't had the chance to try it. I'm having oatmeal instead of rice, for now.

Since you've been doing exercise for months now and all you need to do is a little more discipline on your self. There's no way one can get rid of ride if your not eager enough to remove it from your diet. If you cannot do it in an instant, why not try gradual removal. Such as eating only a half rice in the morning, then no rice in lunch, then another half cup at dinner. the you can remove the half cup at dinner. until you can removed it to in breakfast.
• Philippines

I've cut down on rice by not having any during breakfast. But, yes, I need to discipline myself more. Sometimes, I still take in more carbo from other source like bread.

Try to eat brown rice. It is full of fiber and minerals unlike white rice. It is actually the original rice that we have in the Philippines before the Americans introduced the well-milled rice (white rice). I have tried it. We bought it from the supermarket, it's 44.50 pesos/kl. I love the texture of the brown rice.It makes you chew more and yet it tastes good. When you cook it, you need to soak it in water for at least 30 mins before cooking to make it softer.

I've started having oatmeal, instead of rice for either lunch or dinner or breakfast. I think I'm getting used to it, now. And, sooner I won't be craving for rice anymore.
