Made French Toast for Breakfast

Nothing earth shattering about that, I supppose. It is just that I hadn't made it in a few years. In fact, the way how to do it probably leaked out of mind several years ago too. Just looked in the fridge and saw this one solitary egg looking at me and then I thought, 'Let me make French Toast for the children'. Eureka! So I served it with Bologna and put in cinnamon and a touch of sugar and a dash of milk in the egg mixture. Instant success with children who think that I am very clever as they have never had French Toast before So what did you have for breakfast?

Bologna? That is a curious thing to eat with french toast, that is what I usually eat for lunch, and not very often either because I tend to avoid lunch meat if I can. Now as for the french toast itself, I love it and I sprinkle powdered sugar on top when I make it. Though it has been months since I made this delicious treat, due to time and the fact that my son prefers waffles, so on weekends, if I have time, I make a double batch to last us for a few days. This morning for breakfast, I had a scrambled eggs, toast with cherry jam, and grapefruit.

I have to explain that the fridge is nearly empty as I have not shopped apart from bread, milk and veggies, for several weeks as I wanted to use up what is there. So many containers with food in them and I do not like waste. There was bologna so this is what they ate - wth a little pancake syrup on it The cherry jam sounds delicious. Haven't had that in years either Do you freeze the waffles? and if so, how do you reheat them?

Ah I see, well if they enjoy bologna with syrup, that's fine..lol As for the waffles, not they barely last 3-4 days, so I just refrigerate them. But if I did freeze them, I would just not cook them as long before I freeze them, then when I want one, I'd just allow it to defrost a little and then toast them. Of course I don't have a regular pop-up toaster, I have a toaster oven, primarily for toasting odd shaped food like this.

My mother would say that something has to be in your stomach Bananas are goodWe used to grown bananas on our farm for export. We also use to eat them green - boiled and they tasted so good. Soft boiled bananas with fish or chicken plus gravy. I actaually have a few banana plants growing in my garden plus plantain.

I was all about the French toast until you mentioned the bologna. I should make some French toast and dazzle my boyfriend with it one of these days. Of course, he has his breakfast routine; so, I would have to either serve it as a weekend brunch or have it for lunch during the week. I'm not certain if the lunch thing would work for him, though... I had chocolate coffee for breakfast this morning. I wasn't actually in the mood to eat anything when I first got up. I was awake until too late and got out of bed too late; it just threw my entire day off.

The children wanted bologna with syrup. I know. Sounds disgusting doesn't it? Yes, make it for your boyfriend as it is so easy and tastes really yummy. If I go to bed late and sleep late I also feel out of kilter as it were so I know how you feel. I would have had two strong cups of coffee to wake me up and get the motor running

French toast is good. As a child I didn't like it as much. Now I enjoy it more. I would rather of had pancakes - my favorite, as a child. I'm glad yours were liking it though!

With bologna? Is bologna in Jamaica the same thing as balogna in America? 'Cause that sounds like a mighty interesting combo.

Sorry I missed your response. But I have not received emails for nearly 18 months so have to go back and check each post that I make. So time consuming. Yes, the same Bologna - in fact it is imported from the US but we do have our own too.

i haven't made french toast in a while. my youngest daughter loved it and so i did make it for her. i would add cinnamon and nutmeg into the egg and serve it with maple syrup. i have to say that as a kid, i loved french toast but haven't eaten it in years and i mean YEARS. i only like it with maple syrup but it has to be the real maple syrup and not that fake aunt jemima stuff. the real stuff here costs about 30.00 or more for just a small little jug. it is made locally but it is like liquid gold here. since my uncle stopped making it i have not had pancakes or french toast.

oh, i grew up with everything home-grown and baked from scratch. it took me a long time to get used to the store-canned veges even and i really have a problem with any packaged desserts. i can taste the preservatives. We always had fresh butter and eggsetc. Times have changed and i have gotten used to some of it but i can only go just so far. maybe that is why i manage to stay so thin?

I kind of know what you mean. My mother would economise on many things but not on marmalade or coffee. They had to be what she cosidered to be the best. So I di understand what you are saying with regard to pancake syrup. But then, I have never tasted the real stuff. I am so in love with cunnamon and even make cinnamon tea. I wish that you could treat yourself to the real stuff though and enjoy it again

The kids are gone and I don't work till tonight, so I got to sleep in today. I have been making toffee popcorn for an order since I got up. I just cooked up some horrible for me, but oh so good appetizers in the oven. Jalapeno poppers and mushroom bites. I am sure I will have heartburn from it all later. I am actually just picking at it though because I am not really hungry now that they are done. I love French toast, but my kids usually prefer pancakes. I don't use cinnamon usually. I do egg, milk, and vanilla. Dust the top with powdered sugar as well.

I do remember sending you toffee about 4 years ago. I am still in the toffee business, but it has never really turned into a full time thing. I do make enough for Christmas money though in the colder months.

Oh, i thought u had created something new, lol. I loved fried bologna . My grandmother use to fix a quick supper w/it. she would fry it so it would cup up, put creamed potatoes topped w/cheese in the meat , run it under the broiler till the cheese melted. It was yummy. Of course they put syrup on it to, i would have to. I'd probably eat cardboard if it had syrup on it.

I love the way you Gm did with the bologna. I will use it that way as it really sounds delicious. They will still want to put syrup on it.

Those children had never had French toast before? What a treat for them! I remember my grandmother's home made bread cut thick and made into Bante egg French toast. Yum! And her hotcakes were the size of a regular frying pan and an inch thick!

Yes, they can have a little cornmeal in them. I like cornmeal in any form but dislike kernals of corn or corn on the cob. Weirs isn't it? The word johnny or a corruption of the word journey. These cakes were made to eat whilst going from one destination to another. Instant bread I suppose

Oh gosh. I don't know what hot cake are. I wonder if they ere the same as our Johnny cakes? Like a bread dough with a little sugar added and fried in oil? Rather like fried dumplings? They may have had it before when they lived with their mother but not with me

I just read your post, friend. As I read what did I have for breakfast, guilt set in. I had this lonely stuffed fried potato left from yesterday. I confess that I did not eat it yesterday because I was full (ate 2 big ones). The potato called me from the fridge when I went to take out a not so interesting piece of bread. So I gave in and heated it. I promise that I will eat a green bean salad (from my veggie patch) and nothing else for lunch. By the way, I love french toast.

I need to eat healtheir and try to some days. Not in the mood to diet and need to lose 12 lbs. I tend to eat the children's leftovers these days too. I don't know what a stuffed potato is. Is it a potato cake made from mashed potatoes with veggies or meat added? I make them into patties and then fry them. I have to stop eating fried food too

Yes. I stuff them either with a wonderful inside with ground meat, fried diced onions with garlic and spices or I just put some cheese inside so it melts when I fry it. This ones had the meat filling. I cover them with sugar when I eat them. It`s a no-no for diets, but I can`t imagine anything that tastes better.

I had ham sandwich with spicy mayo. And then when I got to work, my boss bought me a cup of coffee. Me and the kids are planning to go out tonight (junk food) and eat at A&W. My oldest loves the poutine there. They do serve french toast there for breakfast. I wonder if they serve it at night too.

hello, Cynthiann! you have just reminded me to make those french toast again. It has been such a long time, too since I made one. My kids love them too however, I really seldom make them coz they love eating rice in the morning. This morning, we had rice and lechong paksiw. Lechong paksiw is roasted pig cooked with vinegar and liver sauce with sugar. I am not sure if you have tasted it, but it is one delicious dish. You might want to try that from one of the Filipino Restaurants in your place.

I grew up eating bread or oatmeal at breakfast. But my husband was brought up having rice in the morning. So when we gitarried, it has alwsys been rice on the table during breakfast. I feel that my kids need a heavy breakfast as well coz they leave at 6am during school days, have their breakfast as early as 5am. I hope yoy'd get the chance to eat some Filipino dishes in the future. I.m sure you would enjoy them, too.

hi cynthiann We had that for breakfast yesterday but ours was so blah as they serve it cold and do not use enough eggs to really make it taste like real french toast.I know cooking for 114 people is not easy but heck they have been doing if for a few years so they should learn a few tricks by now like using more eggs for so many people. WE had pancakes and eggs for breakfast this morning.

Yesterday evening our neighbor brought over two big bags of glazed donuts and also a bag of sweet croissants that were left over from the food ministry that he does at his church (he is a preacher and will bring us treats that are left over from time to time). So this morning for breakfast I ended up having one of the sweet croissants that he had brought over here. It was delicious and it was really big as well so now that it is getting close to supper time, I have to admit that I'm not feeling any hunger at all.
