What is your opinion on deer hunting?

I couldn't personally deer hunt (unless my kids, family or friends were starving). But I have absolutely nothing against deer hunters. Some seem to viciously hate them, and then they'll go out for a big steak dinner. I mean, really?
- I live in farm country, and they say if deer were unchecked, now that their predator the wolf has been reduced by quite a bit, the deer would multiply like mice and eat up much of the crops used to stock grocery shelves. Is hunting an issue of choice?

I am a hunter and enjoy being out in the wild and enjoy the peace and quiet. If I kill a deer then I consider myself lucky. I hunt with a group so someone in the group usually gets a deer or two so we have the meat.
What I can't understand why someone would go to a outdoor rock or country concert where you are surrounded by drunks, people yelling and screaming and you walk around with all the litter on the ground.

I hope that's not the modern day version of a day with nature!

PETA and other groups are very savvy in the sense that they realize most people don't care about something unless it's in their faces. And then they only care because it's in their face.
For instance: When's the last time anyone worried about guys kicking and abusing turkeys at a turkey farm? But when PETA shows the video, there's all sorts of outrage.
This works for everything from skinny polar bears to people dying in war.
No one cares about it unless it's thrown in their faces. Once the video's out of your head for a day or two, life goes back to normal and that cause suddenly isn't as worthy.
So people who "hate" these deer hunters only manage to "hate" them when someone brings it up.
I wouldn't call them opportunists. Opportunists are the folks who throw the paint on old white ladies' fur coats and not P Diddy's fur coat. They want to be bullies more than anything.
I'd say the people who attack the deer hunters just don't want to know about people hunting deer, and they get really angry that they have to know about it.
Of course, I said "no one" up there, and that's wrong. There are a few diehards in any cause who really do make it a mission to change these things. But by and large these folks seem to be outraged more that they have to know it's going on rather than outraged that it is going on.
It's like I always used to joke about with my ex: "You can't hate people because polar bears and dying and then hate polar bears because they eat the seals!"
Going down the line, you'd have to hate the seals and the fish and everything that's part of the food chain.
Yeah. People just don't want to know about it. They don't care that it's happening, but how dare someone bring it to their attention!

That's a new take on it.. I never thought about it that way..
I too wouldn't mind a world where no animal is ever harmed! (or person, especially child).

Where I grew up, there was a "game preserve" just down the road from us where people co-habitated with the wild life of central Texas and hunting was strictly forbidden. However, on occasion, the deer would breed too fast for the coyotes to keep up with and ended up causing all sorts of trouble. During drought season you'd find sickly dear all over the place, so the city opened up bow-hunting in order to cull the population.
I don't care for trophy hunting. I believe strongly in eating what you kill. It's what my father taught me when I was a kid, and it's a value that I've always held. So anyone who hunts who doesn't waste what they kill, I don't have a problem with it.

Exactly and if the hunter doesn't eat it, then he should give the meat to someone who will.

I think hunting is a issue of choice but there are enough hunters that it makes it a good thing to keep the population down. I think that hunting is okay as long as it is for eating and not for trophies. Don't even get me started with the issue of wolf hunts. I am still trying to get used to that.

I don't approve of wolf hunting either! Last I knew they are just finally starting to come back in population.. if we had more wolves we wouldn't need as much deer hunting.. I could very easily be a vegetarian

I couldn't. I am not big on vegetables. If we could get wolves to just hunt deer and not cattle the whole things would be solved.

Hunting deer is an illegal thing in our country. So we don't kill them in our country. Hunting them when your family is starving may be a reason for you but killing animals in this way makes the extinction of the species.

When you live in a rural area, you are face to face with the deer. They are the reason our garden is fenced. Unfortunately, our orchard isn't, and deer love apples. So between the deer and the ground squirrels we didn't get to enjoy one apple from either of our three apple trees. The deer come very boldly into the orchard in family groups and feast on our apples when we can't see them at night. We know they are there because sometimes we do catch them, and then they run away. I've never tasted venison, but sometimes I think I would enjoy it very much. But I don't think I'd be able to actually shoot one of these apple thieves myself. The thing I'm most afraid of, though, is that we are the only ones around that don't have the double deer fences that all our vineyard neighbors have. That means the deer only come here. And that means when the cougar finds out about it, she will pursue them here. And I don't want to run into the cougar some night.

I've tried venison twice in my life and both times it was horrible, but I understand it tastes best ground up and mixed with hamburger. I'm not giving it another chance because it was totally nasty tasting! Then again, maybe if it ate enough apples! LOL

Hello flowerchild. I have enjoyed deer meat but have never hunted them. Given the opportunity I would eat it again as it is really healthier than beef. The other day my daughter was hit by a deer on her way to work. Too big a population with out any enemies. Many enjoy hunting for both the sport and the meat. For myself I don't think I could shoot a deer or any other animal. I see it as a way to control the population to keep it from starving in lean hard winter and to also control diseases. I don't think of them as that cute Bambi deer from the movie. Maybe because I was raised in the country.

Hunting for food is a right and a means of survival for some. Especially right now. I know a lot of people that are hunting to feed their family. I have an antelope in my freezer right now.
Hunting for sport I feel is wrong. I believe the animals are a part of the food chain and we should use as much of each animal as possible.

I always think when I get to have some venison in my freezer that maybe it has spared some poor steer for a bit.. I sometimes yearn for the older ways (before food 'grew' in supermarkets!

Venison is probably my favorite red meat. It is one of the most nutritious meats out there. People I know who are on special diets that restrict red meat are all allowed to eat venison.
As for hunting deer, I've never understood why people who hate it when people hunt have no problem with animals killing each other.

At my summer place there are so many deer they have become a hazard and staff has to thin out their ranks. Now personally, I wish they would round them up and we all have a venison BBQ from time to time, but half of the people there would have a fit. So they drive them out into the wilderness and let them loose, where I would imagine other wild animals get them anyway. We have security guys called "Public Safety" up there and a while back one of them ran into a deer that was crossing the road in front of the guard shack and the "safety officer" broke both of his legs. Not the deer's legs, but the man's. So now we have Securitas instead of our own employees to patrol the valley. Duhhh.

I live in a city that has a large population of deer. It's not uncommon to see them and I've had to brake more than once for them. During rutting season one has to be especially careful because the males will venture even on the busier roads. One actually jumped over my son when he was a toddler! Thankfully, he was small for his age!
There aren't that many predatory animals to keep the herds in check. On rare occasions there might be a panther, but not enough to control the amount. The risk of over population affects the deer's ability to find food and if it can't be controlled by nature, it must be controlled by hunting.

These days there is no need to hunt, as everything is right there in your local grocery. But when I was growing up my dad hunted to help feed the family and he taught me and my siblings how, too. I could hunt if I had to and do it well and humanely but I don't see the need at the moment.
Unfortunately, we're overrun with deer in the state I live in. Humans have destroyed or driven away all their natural enemies and would you believe my state, Ohio, was #4 on the list of the most deer/car collisions last year?
I would rather hunt than eat the meat in the grocery that has been penned up, injected with steroids and hormones and raised in an unnatural environment. But I don't have the freezer to store it or the intestinal fortitude to dress and butcher it. And I don't like killing animals.
So I myself would not hunt deer unless driven to it but I think others have a right to and they are helping keep the deer population down. If not, there would be many more starving deer every winter and that's jmore inhumane as a quick shot to the heart.

I never tried hunting a deer but have eaten a hunted deer meal.Well,if deer was not yet extinct in your area, then maybe it can be hunted for food.Hunting is basically a practice of our ancestors from the stone age. However, if deers and other animals faces extinction, then it's better to avoid hunting them for food.

I could easily be a vegetarian.. but I love hunter / fishing (and gardening) type folks.. they're very real and down to earth.. I think we miss and have lost a lot what with mass production.. it has sucked some of the life out of life!

I don't mind people that hunt, I understand it's a sport....But I can't think about it too much because I get upset. I feel like a hypocrite because I LOVE all animals, and I believe all of them should be held as high as humans if not higher, but then again...I love to eat meat. That's why I can't read into it too much...If I did, I'd become a vegetarian...And I really don't want that!
