I made it to Albany CA and back yesterday. I went to a bookstore there to pick up a novel my brother had ordered for me.
Albany is only about 30 miles from where I live, but with Bay Area traffic, it's about a 3 1/2 hour...

Today, I found a quarter
laying on an empty lot.
It isn’t that much money,
but it’s all the dough I’ve got.
I lost my job two years ago,
then my home and all my pensions,
and all that I’ve amassed since then
is this blasted...

So today Bob got up way early. We went to a farm store, bought a new bird feeder and some raw peanuts.
In between other things, I mowed the front yard taking a break to charge the battery.
This evening we watched The Jazz...

Back in March, I wrote about a penguin that washed up on our south coast. I mentioned Heard Island and said that bird flu had been detected there although all swabs taken were negative.
However, the news today is that an...

Our Italian lodger (let’s call her Paola) asked me a while ago whether Malva plants grew here. In this country plants of the genus ‘Malva’ are known as Mallow, for example common mallow, musk mallow, and marsh mallow (originally...

I used to stay awake until 1 or 2 AM, grading papers, and still be ready for my 8 AM class.
I am not so sure I could do that now.
Am I "old and full of sleep," to quote my late father?
It is only 8:30 PM, but I look forward...

I wrote about the giant palm tree that has separate male and female trees. Pumpkins have male and female flowers. I was researching why it might be that I have no baby pumpkins on my vines.
Apparently, the male flowers appear...

Finally we have some sunshine today. Temps are in the 60s F, and the pavement is drying.
I am glad we had a few days of rain. Perhaps I will see some sprouts soon. So far I have planted green beans, corn and sunflower. I may get...

Some people do. Some people don’t. I always wanted a formal garden or an English garden, but I have a special garden.
It’s a garden where if I can dig a hole without a huge rock in it, tree
roots, and patches of clay soil, I...

Our fridge broke down a while ago and we’ve at last bought a new one after a bit of a battle with the insurance company.
