2/12/24 - Update on my Husband

This phone thing in my husband's room is getting to be annoying. He can't hear anyone on the phone, even when the volume is turned up; so I have been unable to speak with him. Today I will talk with the woman who is trying to set up a rehab facility for my husband to go to. I am hoping that he will be moved soon, because they are not getting my husband up out of bed, they don't seem to be too concerned about his not eating and he just keeps getting weaker and weaker. Very concerning. I am going to talk to the nurse today to see what can be done. By the way, I found a 1/2 dozen Meals on Wheels lunches in the freezer. Hubby hasn't been eating them; and he lost 20 pounds before going into the hospital. Thank you for your continued prayers, thoughts and concerns. You are all such good friends. Photo Credit: Pixabay

That doesn't sound good at all. Letting him languish there is doing him no good at all. He really needs a patient advocate of some sort by the sound of it.

I am praying that the doctors and nurses caring for your husband will also consider you as they start planning things, you should be in charge of what is going on.

Yes. The hospital should be giving him Boost or Ensure or something to give him some substance.

@LadyDuck I spoke with the nurse yesterday; and she said she would order some Boost or Ensure for him. Without my intervention, I don't think they would have done anything.

They should be getting him up. I would voice my concern and complain about that if there is no medical reason for him not to get up with assistance!!

Apparently he is getting physical therapy every day. I don't know how he's managing when he's not eating.

You know the lack of nutrition could be a contributing factor to his problem. Lots of people have had “brain fog” from not eating (causing a big dip in the blood sugar to low levels).

@LindaOHio — my personal opinion is that you need to talk to a medical supervisor in that hospital and tell them your concerns. You’re his voice right now. You’re also your own voice! Make sure they know he’s been “stashing” food and not eating, and let someone with some authority know your worries!

@FourWalls He will be transferred to a rehab facility maybe as early as today. He ate some ice cream and 1/2 roll yesterday. I was able to speak with him on a nurse's cell phone. He almost sounded like his old self.

It's the hospital that is not caring well for your hubby? I worry about him cause nursing homes and such don't always have the time it sounds like he needs for getting up and about etc. I'm glad you found those meals.

I don't think the hospital is doing enough. They should put him on Boost or Ensure. I guess he is getting physical therapy; but I don't know how much.

@LindaOHio It’s so hard when people just lose interest in food and drinks. You have spoken of his speech being garbled. He may be having some trouble swallowing? Usually they cal use an IV to keep the patient hydrated but they rarely put a feeding tube or such in If there is anything he has asked for like ice cream or something, sometimes that will kick in the appetite. Not always, but might be worth trying! I am so sorry it’s not going better for you .

If a person is chained to the hospital bad for a long time and can’t move around that can be bad for the legs. He has to be able to move around. Why wasn’t hubby eating his lunches before?

That isn't good that he has lost so much weight before his hospitalization as he probably has lost more since admission. I hope that you can get in touch with someone that will listen to your concerns and address them. He should be sitting up at the very least to build his strength and keep his blood flowing properly.
