2/20/24 - Update on My Husband

This all happened too quickly; and I haven't had time to adjust. Spent quite a bit of time yesterday crying. The thought of my husband, who I've been with for 57 years, not coming home is devastating.
Hubby's friend went to visit him yesterday. As usual hubs was in the dining room sitting in front of his plate of food. No one was there feeding him. At one point he wanted some ice water. His friend went to get him some. Hubby insisted on holding the glass himself even though his friend tried to hold it for him. Of course the glass and water ended up on the floor. My husband asked if I had come with him. That broke my heart. He thinks he just arrived yesterday; but he's been there since Friday.
His cousin brought his clothes to the facility yesterday. She found out from the rehab people that hubs doesn't know his address, doesn't know what year it is (he said it was 1842 and he just got married). They have him in that wheelchair that he can't get out of; and I know it hurts his back. All they did in rehab was have him sit in a chair. What good will that do? He needs arm and hand strength too so he can hold a cup. They are supposed to call me; and I will give them a piece of my mind.
I will go and see him again on Thursday. I wish he was closer.
Thank you for your continuing prayers, thoughts and support. You are all dear friends.

Of all the people here, you understand more because you've met him and seen that he was OK.

I feel so sorry Linda. I remember when my Mother was moved to a rheab, she had the same treatment, no one took care of her. I hope you can move him in a place where he has a better care. He has lost his memory but he remembers people, that is very good.

@LindaOHio I do not believe that your husband is well enough to start a rehab program.

I'm going to call the woman who placed him there to see what her thoughts are.

I do hope you can get him moved to a place that has better care. I know it has to be truly hard to see him like this. I am glad he remembers people, especially you. That means a lot. Hugs and prayers, Linda.

Thank you, Marie. I'm going to start with the woman who placed him there. She knows all about various facilities.

This is heartbreaking. People are not treated well in places like this it seems. My grandpa was in one and it wasn’t great there but they couldn’t release him.
I wonder if the fall led to all this… and if he would be fine if he hadn’t fallen.

YES! That's why I blame myself. If he hadn't gone out on the porch to get the package, he wouldn't have fallen; and he'd still be home.

@LindaOHio you couldn’t have stopped him from going to get it though. Even if you said not to get it he may have done it anyway.

Gosh, I feel so bad for you (and him) to have to go through this. I wish I had better words to offer in consolation or comfort. But of course, even as a writer, sometimes there simply are no words. But rather only to say we are keeping you and hubby in our thoughts, and while we are not physically there to offer any support or comfort, we are happy to at least be an outlet and a shoulder as well as a ray of sunshine and hope. All the best to you and hubby.

I am handling it better than I thought I would. The worst part is when I'm with him. That's when I really lose it.
