Why is steak costing close to $30/lb?

I have been on a steak kick recently. @Vandana7 tells me that I will be reincarnated as a slug, but I have been feeling the need for more protein recently
I thought we generated beef in the US. I see cows in the California hills in Spring and Summer. Why would Trump's tariffs increase the cost of beef in the US?
Can you inform me? I am a simple music teacher. M'kay?

Contrary to what you believe, America imports beef from India. We sell young male calfs to the US. And America wanted to sell farm products mostly cotton and grains to us. We refused. America wanted us to stop buying oil from Russia we refused because our country has very little oil resources, and we have also set up refineries through which we refine the crude we import and sell to other nations, making some profit for the job.
Donald Thumb is not happy about it. He is also not happy that we are not giving him credit for India Pakistan skirmish becoming a full fledged war. He wants Nobel Prize.
So he slapped stiff tariffs ..50 percent to be precise on imports from India.
With recent Alaskan meeting, I presume that would be reduced to 25 percent. Our trade with your country is barely 2 percent of our GDP. But yes, your sellers will take advantage of the present news and hike up the prices arbitrarily blaming the tariffs imposed on us.
Am I making sense to the "simple" music teacher?
Use your Ensure for protein, its good.

@sjvg1976 The reason we stopped the war? America warned us of the serious intent of Pakistan to use nuclear arsenal.
We stopped because of our vulnerability. For all that bravado of saying we will hit them with double force, we stopped because of our vulnerability. Yes, that is the reason.
You see, if we use nuclear weapons against Pakistan, we will be left with very few to fight with China.
Added to that, a nuclear attack will push us behind almost 30 years. We no longer have an ally in Bangladesh....we milked that friendship enough irritating them with our patronizing attitude.
Why did Pakistan stop? It stopped because the top leaders, read military folks, wanted to get richer, so the IMF loan was dangled as the lollipop.
They will buy a few weapons, maybe fifth generation weapons, and rest of it they will pocket, and then we will have a really serious issue on our hands.
Our Prime Minister is doing the job of rubbing salt on wounds in every speech instead of keeping silent about it. So are the ministers. You make the need to get even stronger in their minds.
When Stauffenberg decided to kill Hitler, he sent his family away. The same thing the Pakistani leaders are doing. They are buying properties in Portugal and other nations nearby with IMF funds. After the new weapons arrive, they would be back in the business.
So we have not averted the war. We have deferred it. Our Prime Minister and all others need to shut up. There is no room for complacency. As Ramchandra ji said, what goes up, will come down. That is the rule of the nature.
Here is what he said to Bharat Ji....
That is the reality ...LOL
Net net US did stop the war through Pakistan, pulling strings to get them IMF loans.

Surely , he will get Nobel prize for settling wars between the countries. It's all about business. Trump knows that he won't be able to control India so thought of 50% tariff against India . He thought India will succumb and do whatever they want us to do but we didn't.

Because people still have to eat and stores keep raising prices even when the things are totally produced in the US, they keep going up.

@TheHorse Labor cost is high in the United States, not imported beef is expensive because of labor costs (even higher now that Trump threw out immigrant workers). Importer beef is now expensive because of the tariffs, the opposite of a double win.

Depends on what store you buy the steak I guess. I’ve not seen $30/lb. But I’ve seen steak in the $20s/lb.

@TheHorse lol I remember when I was first married...my husband has always loved steak. I would buy steak, mushrooms, the weekly groceries and a bottle of bubbly. I usually spent around $25 per week.

With eggs, the price increase was because chickens got sick and so supply was diminished, but I have not heard anything about massive cattle illnesses. Everything across the board has just gotten incredibly high since January.

I don't know if the tarrifs have anything to do with it, but I If we had to guess, idiots decide to import what we don't need to. Often its fodder for the cows or meat, itself because of course why not?

$30/Ibs? I assume that they are raw beef that you will need to cook later. It is freaking expensive. America export beef hence I do not understand why is there a rise in the price unless the feed of the cow or the medication of the cows are imported./

@TheHorse We didn't. Trump is lying when he says prices in general are going down. Everything is going up.

It's due to a combination of things, tariffs being a very small part of it. We have the lowest cattle population since 1951 due to a variety of causes. We've had droughts in Texas and Kansas making it harder and more costly to feed livestock. We had a screwworm outbreak in Mexico, leading to less cattle coming from there. There are higher tariffs on cattle coming from Brazil and Australia (there's your tariff answer). Demand; high demand, low supply.
That all said, I have not seen steaks anywhere near $30. Maybe $15-20 though.

It's nuts. Even just plain old ground beef is ridiculous. I don't really know how anyone can afford to eat steak on a regular basis. Hope you find some you can enjoy.
