Wikipedia says that "A mushroom or toadstool is the fleshy, spore-bearing, fruiting body of a fungus..." A mushroom contains a cap, stem and gills under the cap. Forms deviating from the standard are the puffball, stinkhorn, truffle, bolete and morel. The truffle, for example, grows under the ground. In the 15th and 16th centuries mushrooms were referred to as mushroms, mousheroms, etc. In the 14th century in England the word toadstool appears. The word possibly means an inedible, poisonous fungus which a toadstool is. Mushrooms may be edible, poisonous or unpalatable. There are approximately 14,000 species. Some of the edible varieties are chanterelles, shitake, oyster, button, lobster, crimini and portobello. Some poisonous varieties are toxic, mind-altering, death cap, false parasol, jack o' lantern, inky cap, brain, angel wing and laughing Jim. Mostly water, a mushroom contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Mushrooms can lower cholesterol, are good for gut health, safe for diabetics, can lower blood pressure and are anti-inflammatory which boosts the immune system. Do you like mushrooms? What kind? Do you cook with them? *****Do not forage for mushrooms unless you are an expert or in the company of an expert.***** Photo Credit: Pixabay

Yes, I love mushrooms but Pretty HATES them... She says they taste like dirt and throws fits if I use them in my cooking. (She USED to love them when I'd batter and fry slices of mushrooms in butter. I don't know what happened to change that but something did...) I have some button mushrooms in cans in the cupboard and used to add them to scrambled eggs or soups but if Pretty sees the can on the counter, she starts screaming that I'm trying to poison her. I tell her to leave it all for me and she won't have to worry about it but she won't stop...

@LindaOHio Different types of mushrooms have different flavors. I've never found any that taste like dirt, though.

I like mushrooms. We use them in spaghetti sauce, as pizza toppings and in stir fries. We have bought a lot of Baby bella and Portabella mushrooms.

Yup. I like them on pizza or with a steak...or mushroom soup. My FIL who was a chef for a chain of restaurants thought they had no taste. I think he lost his sense of taste because he would season the hell out of his food with salt and pepper without even tasting it.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing about mushrooms. I love them. They are a great meat substitute. Also, some types are good for cancer treatment. Some help people who are getting chemotherapy. A lot of nutrients in them We cook with them a lot in the winter. They are one thing that all three of like. We have a lot of fires around here. I knew a woman who would take out after a fire and pick the chantelles that grew up after a fire. She would sell them to the local restaurants and made a lot of money.

Yes, the edible ones not the mind-altering kinds. They go great on chicken dishes like chicken franchise, steak, and I've had them with pasta dishes and pizza too. Whatever type they serve the food on, is the kind I eat.
