Do You Like Cake?

Yellow, chocolate, angel food, white, German chocolate, ice cream, Cassata, red velvet, confetti, pineapple upside down, carrot, fruit, cheese, sponge, coffee, flourless, tiramisu and stollen...the list is endless. Cakes come in all shapes and sizes and are made for a multitude of occasions. Many cakes are a work of art. There are two kinds of cake - shortened, made with fat, and unshortened, made without fat. The word cake has a Viking origin (kaka); and the ancient Greeks made a cake of flour, eggs, milk, nuts and honey. Romans made a cake called placenta (yes, you read that correctly). In the early 14th century cakes in England were essentially bread. During the Renaissance, possibly in Spain, cakes were leavened with beaten eggs. During the Great Depression a surplus of molasses prompted a company to patent the first box cake. Do you like cake? What's your favorite? Do you bake from scratch or use a box mix? My favorite is a white cake with lots of white frosting. My husband used to scrape off a lot of the frosting; but not me. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Placenta cake recipe is still interesting in our days. The word placenta comes from Greek and it means "layered". My favorite cake is the Black Forest cake.

@LindaOHio Yes, three layers of chocolate sponge cake, whipped creams and sour cherries in syrup if you want to make the traditional German cake.

@LadyDuck @LindaOHio I like Black Forest gateau too, and the interesting thing about the recipe I use is that it doesn't contain any flour, so gluten free. It's also very easy but always impresses people so very useful!

I won't eat chocolate cake or cheesecake and there are a lot of cakes I've never tried so don't know if I'd eat them or not... My favorite is a yellow cake with chocolate icing on it. (I take the cake fresh from the oven, poke holes in patterns in it and then slather on chocolate icing. Adding the icing while the cake is hot lets the icing melt into the cake so the icing and cake are mixed well and tastes absolutely delicious!) I used to make cakes from scratch but usually buy a box mix now... I still do make sugar cookies from scratch but also use a boxed cake mix to make cookies, too. I rarely make any desserts anymore because Pretty and I are both overweight but we're both slowly losing the extra weight, too. (I lost another 12 lbs in July. )

Yay for losing weight. Putting the icing on a warm cake sounds really good. How are your eyes doing?

@LindaOHio Thanks... My eyes are fine but things are blurry more than a foot away from my face. That's still better than them being swollen shut!

My all time favorite cake is German Chocolate cake. I only make a cake by scratch when I have a lot of time now or find a new recipe that I can't resist!! So, most of the time it is box mixes these days!

I sort of can't imagine people not liking cake, but there are a few oddballs out there I guess. I know one of my cousin's didn't like desserts when he was a kid, other than a bit of ice cream every now and again. Favorite cake, I would say coconut. I rarely make them from scratch, but sometimes will add things to a box mix.

Little One doesn't like cake. For her birthdays we used to create various things using sweets and biscuits (cookies). Nowadays she generally wants a birthday cake so that her friends can enjoy it

I do not mind a little piece of Black Forest cake or of homemade Christmas cake. My mother used to make the best Christmas cakes, either light or dark, and always aged in Brandy.

I’m not big on sweets but I will never turn down ice cream cake. My favorite actual cake is coconut cake. I have a crazy recipe for that. Otherwise I’m like you—white cake with vanilla frosting. I never use a boxed mix.

@LindaOHio Our wedding cake was hilarious. As you know we were married in Mexico. The owner of the condo complex also ran the restaurant on the top floor. It was excellent. My mother asked for an ice cream cake with coconut and chocolate ice cream. Oh they did that but they iced it with buttercream frosting. It was INSANE but in a good way. I'll never see anything like that again.

Our wedding cake was white with vanilla frosting and was made by Hough Bakeries where my MIL worked in catering. They were well known for their tasty wedding cakes.

@LindaOHio Yes, it's basically a plan vanilla cake that's filled with jam and cream as a Victoria sponge, or add cocoa powder to make chocolate cake, or adapt it with any number of flavourings or fillings. I don't actually know what angel food cake is, I'll have to look it up!

@LindaOHio I looked up angel food cake, it seems to be like what I would call a sponge cake but with a lot more sugar and with lots of egg whites instead of whole eggs
This American cake is incredibly light as it’s made with whisked egg whites and no fat. Mary Berry decorates her version with homemade lemon curd and passion fruit seeds. Equipment and preparation: You will need a 25cm/10in angel food cake pan.
