Am taking cousin #3 to Red Lobster on Tuesday. It's been over a year since I've been to a restaurant. I can hardly wait!! I don't understand Terminix. I am paying sixty some dollars per month. I spoke with someone there; and they said that a tech only comes out 3x a year. So what am I paying for? I need to cancel this. Got my lab results. I am pre-diabetic....not a surprise; and my kidney function is decreased as usual. My PCP wants me to go to a nephrologist. I think all I need to do is to increase my water intake. I don't want to go to another specialist. She also has ordered a kidney test. NO! Breakfast - Protein bar Lunch - Meals on Wheels - Stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies Dessert/Snack - Banana chocolate chunk muffin Dinner - Buffalo chicken/Muenster sandwich, chips, Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Cookie What did you eat yesterday? I hope you enjoy your restaurant visit. I like to go out for a meal at least once or twice a month. I have favourite places where I can guarantee a decent meal. I also give new places “a go” but I am often disappointed. Since the pandemic, hospitality has gone to the dogs. I don’t know what Terminix is, but I wouldn’t pay $60 a month for service I wasn’t happy with. I do pay an extortionate amount in council tax, but I have to pay that by law, unfortunately.

Terminix is an exterminator. I've had a problem with mice forever.

@MarieCoyle I paid big bucks for them to come and seal up all the entry points. I'd better not have any mice this fall.

@LindaOHio Considering the horrible mice problem you had, I think they may show back up as soon as cold weather hits again. Mice are determined and stubborn!! But I do understand about the money.

I had lunch with my niece…at Chuy’s. Chicken taco salad for me. Dinner was a Boca burger and potatoes O’Brien and applesauce and a fiber bar and yogurt! Please go to the nephrologist. I’ve already lost two friends this year with kidney failure as a contributing factor.

Increasing the water intake is essential, you’re right. I also hadn’t realized it’s been a year since you’ve been to a restaurant. That will be very nice for you. Especially since it’s Red Lobster! I had a helping of a really good casserole, and an orange. The casserole had steak, cheese, hash browns…it was so good!

I have closely followed someone with kidney issues It is good that you get a kidney profile done - it is just a blood test and then followi diet recommendations .

If you have a kidneys problem stop eating protein bars, those are bad for the kidneys. I am sure that modifying your diet a bit would help your kidneys a lot.

Why are protein bars bad for the kidneys?

@LindaOHio - I do not know, but I read an article a few weeks ago that Switzerland wants to ban them from the shelves for this reason. I think it's because an excessive concentration of proteins that kidneys need to filer.

@LindaOHio Metabolizing protein causes the production of ketones as a byproduct which are very hard on the kidneys.

Did you sign a contract with Terminex? If so, get it out and go over the fine print. If you terminate a contract, there may be a clause that you have to pay anyway. Increasing your water intake will help, but in all honesty one of the reasons your A1C is climbing and you are pre-diabetic is more than likely excessive carbs and sugars, not lack of water. Ditch the chips and the Little Debbie's...they are so, so processed and simply loaded with all things nasty for a body to process. Consider them a big treat if you can't give them up. Maybe once a week, but not every day. Maybe have a piece of fresh fruit for a snack instead of the muffins...while I agree the muffins are delicious, they are loaded up with sugars. Kidney tests are essential if you are pre-diabetic. You do NOT want kidney failure, EVER.

My way of eating changed a lot after I did the weight loss challenges. Carbs are way less of a thing for me now. I eat many more non-starchy vegetables and lots of fresh fruit which adds hydration and fiber.

@NJChicaa I changed my way of eating, too. I eat a lot more vegetables, and fresh fruits. More salads, too. I try very hard to have a healthy diet, but of course I allow myself a treat now and then. This week, a friend brought us fresh peaches from his trees. I made a peach cobbler and enjoyed my own serving. Took a hunk of it to neighbor Dale, who loves pie or cobbler and is 90 years old...son said it was delicious and he ate a big chunk of it, too. The rest went to another friend close by and I got it out of the house! Otherwise I knew I would eat it...I froze enough sliced peaches to make some other desserts later.

One other suggestion, since you do have sandwiches often is to find the highest fiber bread you can and enjoy your sandwiches with fresh fruit or vegetables. Go see the nephrologist, perhaps they can help you not get so many UTI's. If I were you I would check my Terminex contract as someone else has suggestion. Enjoy your Red Lobster meal.

Red Lobster has gotten very expensive. We only go when we have gotten some extra money some how. I hope you enjoy your outing. I hope you get that cancelled. I think that my doctor said I was pre-diabetic also. These tests can't hurt but they are overwhelming. Kidneys have a job to do and anything you can do to help that is great.

I hope that you totally enjoy your meal out together. Have you ever checked to see if you can get any of your favorite seafoods at the grocery store to prepare at home? I love breaded shrimp, and I buy it and we have it once a week. it does up quite nicely in the air fryer oven. Just a suggestion. Last night I split up a large sirloin steak and we had that and mushrooms and potatoes and a garden salad for supper.

@LindaOHio I would ask the cousin that you are closest to, if she has an air fryer oven. If she does, I wonder if she would bring it over to your place to see if you could manage using that for some meals. I wouldn't want to see you purchase one and then realize that you cannot operate it or you do not like the way the food comes out, that would be a terrible waste of money and hopes, but if you could try using someone else's then it may open another door to increase independence for your. And you know if we were neighbours, I would gladly set mine up on your counter for you to try.

@Juliaacv You are such a sweetheart. I can't stand for more than about a minute; and it's very difficult for me to walk around collecting ingredients, making the food, cleaning up afterwards, putting the food away. I find it too much for me; but thank you so much for the suggestion.

I went to a nephrologist and have regretted it ever since. The doctor told me that since I wasn't experiencing any pain from eating lots of red meat, I really didn't need to take allopurinol but he prescribed it anyway... I really wish I hadn't started taking it. NOW, if I don't take allopurinol, I can start getting gout symptoms at times. I drink plenty of water but won't give up meat. If you don't have pain in your toes or the middle of your feet, just drink plenty of water and you should be fine. If you ever start taking allopurinol, you can't quit taking it. (Gout is arthritis from eating too much red meats. It's caused by uric acid building up in your blood and forming crystals that settle into the joints in your toes/feet and make toes and feet ache and hard to walk without pain.) Unless you've seen signs of termites, you should only call pest control if you start seeing signs of mice or roaches in/around your house. Those payments every month are a "guarantee" that whatever pest control you use will check for pest damage and they say you won't have to pay as much if they do find termites. It's just a way to trap you into paying them when you don't need them. (At our last house, I called pest control every time people moved into the other half of the duplex. Invariably, new people brought mice or roaches with them and the pests came to our side of the duplex. We never saw any signs of pests after one treatment...) I hope you and cousin #3 have a great time at Red Lobster on Tuesday. I don't remember what I ate except for the dinner I posted about here on myLot.

My husband was on allopurinol. I have mice. They've been a problem at every place that's been relatively "rural". Had them down on the beach, in the last house we lived in and now here. Thanks. I will be in a food coma Tuesday night!!!

That'll be great. Hope you have a great meal and great time, as I am sure you will. My mom's twin sister came into town yesterday so last night the whole fam gathered up at my sister and brother-in-law's place and he cooked up hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill and there was a delicious homemade deviled eggs potato salad served up on the side. Good times and good eats!

Hope you enjoy the meal out. Sorry about the diagnosis...I wish I had known at the pre-diabetes stage, now I have a sucky pancreas. Hoping drinking more water helps things. I had some chicken, then pizza for meal 2 and then some tots when my husband and Eli had a burger for dinner...was too full from the pizza still to have a burger too.
